  19. We are considering a AS/400 equipped with an ascii controller to take
  20. advantage of our existing terminals and printers.  I was wondering if anybody
  21. has had any experience with this configuration.   Specifically are there any
  22. limitations associated with using ascii devices.  Other then speed, can
  23. inexpensive "dumb" terminals do everything that the twinax terminals can do?
  24. Any insight would be appreciated

  36. We're installing an AS/400 with the ASCII controller but our planned use
  37. will be dial-in support for PCs.  We don't have it up and running yet but
  38. reviewing the tech specs we don't anticipate any problems.  It support
  39. several ascii emulation types.  You may need multiple keyboard strokes for
  40. command keys and roll-up/down etc.

  42. If you use PCs, the AS/400 PC Support will work with the ASCII Controller
  43. and give you virtual disks as well as host sign on session capability.

  45. Your expense will be will wiring.  BLACK BOX is one of many (can't name
  46. another) companies that will have solutions to reduce the cost.  Watch
  47. your cabling (EIA being what it is... pins 2,3,6,8,21,....

  49. Also you're limited to one terminal to a port (with possibility of an
  50. attached printer).  My recollection is that printer support is basic.

  52. We currently use external 5208 Protocol Converters which are less
  53. functional than the ASCII Controller.  They're attached to a System/36
  54. in the computer room and remote controller at a remote site.
  55. We use IBM 3161s and PCs with good results.  Things like compressed print
  56. on the attached printer was a problem on the 3161.

  58. The PCs use a PRPQ called DIAL/3X from IBM.  The software installs
  59. emulating an IBM 3161 ASCII terminal with docs for changing to VT100 etal.
  60. We use it primarily for off hour technical support, although I have dialed
  61. in at night from my house for application development.

  74. Norman's comments about the ASCII WS are all very valid.

  76. The terminal emulation, such as VT240 seemed reasonably good according to a
  77. technically competent DEC person.  (Which I am not)

  79. As far as speed goes, the maximum speed of the ASCII WS controller is 38.4Kb.
  80. I'm not sure that the response time of a twinax attached terminal is that much
  81. faster.  Maybe only double or so.  Even though twinax is rated at 1Mbps the
  82. interactive response time doesn't look that much faster.  Note that this, of
  83. course, doesn't hold for file transfers and the like.

  85. Note that the new release, 3.0, of OS/400, which you will be getting with any
  86. new AS/400 shipped for the last month or so supports multiple devices
  87. configured for the same ASCII WS port.  That is a VT100, VT240, Wyse xxx, IBM
  88. 3101, and PC Support based PC can each access the same port.  Obviously not
  89. simultaneously but you no longer have to state that VT240's are restricted to
  90. port 4 and 5 while IBM 3101's are restricted to ports 6,7 and 8 and so on.
